The design and production of permanent public art that is integrated with a building, or landscape follows these phases-- timeframe: 6-9 months 1. One artist or several finalists visit and research the site; meet with the committee/group/community and/or other users of the building or site; present models, drawings and materials samples for concept design(s). Committee/community /group provides information and , and gives input during the design process; reviews and approves design to proceed to next phase of evolution.
2. Artist further refines design and develops details,; mock-ups at full scale may be produced of the design or its parts; necessary site preparation designed. Committee/community/group gives final approval to design and it is introduced to the broader community through the exhibition of models and drawings. 3. Artist produces detailed construction drawings if work is to be built by other skilled artisans or contractors. Artist creates the work themselves or oversees fabrication of the work by other artisans/contractors; coordinates the production and installation of the work with site preparation. 4. Concurrently with fabrication/construction, site is prepared with bases/footings, paving, lighting, landscaping, seating, etc. to present the work, or if artist is designing entire site, process proceeds directly to installation phase. 5. Artist installs and delivers work, or if designing entire site, the artist supervises contractors and/or completes the work on the site themselves, as necessary.
